Movement Culture Vienna Performance

The concept of the performance is based on Afro and Dancehall movements, thus fusions show new forms that can arise when combining two styles that are cultural so rich, dance wise so grounded, and tend to never end in the exploration of its body experience. The choreography therefore consists of sequences that are connected to each other, focusing on individual energies.

The performance gives a tour throughout different styles including Old School, Middle School, New School Dancehall, as well as different styles within African modern dances such as Afrohouse, Azonto or Amapiano. When choreographing this piece, the performing artists go deep into their artistry, while not only using their foundation learned through connecting with people from Jamaica as well as from the Afro Dance scene, but creating style-mixed sequences to build a new experience for the audience. Coming together through passion, we are diving into the journey of Dance as guests of Afro and Dancehall culture. While falling for the music and the dance, we are aware of our position as growing up in an central European environment. In order to respect the Jamaican and African culture(s) as well as its people we are constantly learning from, we stay in exchange with the scene, not only through traveling to different events in order to learn from cultural ambassadors, but through longer stays in Kingston, Ivory Coast or Ghana (individual experiences) to understand where dances are coming from, as well as the meanings and history behind it. The objective of our performance is to shed light on these wonderful styles and cultures with respect, homage and gratitute for bringing us lot of joy to our lives which we would love to share with the local community.
