Kathak – A Poetry in Motion

Tanz & Performance

#Expressive Dance #Tänzerin #Kathak

'Kathak' is an Indian Classical Dance form originating in Northern Part of India. It's origins can be traced as back as 400BCE. Dance style "Kathak' originates from a word 'Katha' in Sanskrit which translates to 'Story' in English.

Aboli, through her performance 'Poetry in Motion' showcases two aspects of the dance form first 'Nrittya'. An expressive & contemporary dance which attempts to express a range of humans emotions through facial expressions & symbolic hand gestures.

It takes the viewer through the dramatic & perhaps mystical journey by engaging the emotions and mind of the viewer.

Along with it, 'Kathak' also shows another aspect called as 'Nritta' a rather abstract, fast & rhythmic aspect. Here artist creates various rhythmic sequences by tapping bare feet on stage called as 'Tatkar'.

Another memory worthy aspect of Kathak is the Swirling part or 'Chakkar' in Hindi.

Here the Dancer along with foot rhythms swirls around herself. This aims at sensory enjoyment of the viewer. Dancers Each ankle is adorned with 100 small bells called as 'Ghungaroo' which creates a buzzing sound as she moves across the stage. The dancer's rapid movements and footwork is perfectly timed to the musical beats and tempos.

This summer Aboli will take you through this rollercoaster ride of emotions via her Project, 'Poetry in Motion'
